When i think of oatmeal i think of Quakers Instant Apple Cinnamon in the little microwave packs. I grew up eating them and loved this variety.
I wanted to make a whole food version without artificial flavoring and refined sugar.
here’s the instant oatmeal original Ingredients:
WHOLE GRAIN ROLLED OATS, SUGAR, DEHYDRATED APPLES (TREATED WITH SODIUM SULFITE TO PROMOTE COLOR RETENTION), NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL FLAVOR, SALT, CINNAMON, CALCIUM CARBONATE, CITRIC ACID, GUAR GUM, MALIC ACID, NIACINAMIDE*, REDUCED IRON, VITAMIN A PALMITATE, PYRIDOXINE HYDROCHLORIDE*, RIBOFLAVIN*, THIAMIN MONONITRATE*, FOLIC ACID*, CARAMEL COLOR
For the whole food version you will need: gala apple, rolled oats, unsweetened original plant milk, alcohol free vanilla extract, pure maple syrup, cinnamon powder.
Its all about the gala variety apple here. So make sure you get that kind.
Here are the ratios that make the perfect copycat.
INGREDIENTS:
- 1 gala apple
- 1 1/2 cups rolled oats
- 1 1/2 cups unsweetened original plant milk (more or less depending on your preference)
- 1/4 tsp alcohol free vanilla extract
- 2 tsp ground cinnamon powder
- 1 tbs maple syrup
- 1 tbs ground flaxseed
It’s also all about how small you dice the gala apple. Skin the apple, slice down so you get 4 quarter sections.
Put the flat side down and slice thin slices keeping it together and then cross slice it the other directions to dice it into tiny pieces.
Add the diced apples and the rest of the ingredients into a microwave safe bowl. Stir.
Microwave for 2 minutes (alternatively you can also set on counter to soak up for 10 or so minutes)
Enjoy! I share this with my toddler almost every morning. Yum!

Can this be converted to using steel cut oats? How would you do that?
I have an “Autumn Harvest Pumpkin Steel Cut Oats” recipe. I would follow the cooking directions there but use the apple and flavoring in this one if you like! Enjoy!
